The ISP’s debut vinyl release under their own name is a long-form EP collaging together bits and pieces of their live routines from over the previous year or so. Pared back to the trio of QBert, Shortkut, and Mixmaster Mike, the 12″ features the group’s trademark abstract turntable deviations, wrapping thinly sliced references from soul, rock, jazz, funk, and old-school hip-hop (Doug E. Fresh, Too $hort, Soulsonic Force, Cybotron) around hand-scratched beats, basslines, and constantly shifting rhythmic textures. Not as minimal and controlled as similar passages from the group’s earlier cassette-only releases and compilation tracks (and therefore suffering a little from sloppiness), but also a bit more fun.
