Ludacris Interview on Hard Knock TV

In part 1 Luda talks to Nick Huff Barili about how LL Cool J’s track I’m Bad made him want to start rapping. Ludacris wrote his first rhyme at 9 years old about…his girlfriend. He goes on to say that when he is constructing a song he lets the beat create an atmosphere for how he feels and then he writes to the emotion of that.

As we switch topics Luda talks about his upcoming mixtape which is dropping this friday (May 24th). Luda explains why he chose to called it “I don’t give a fuck”. One of the track from the leaked track-listing that has people talking is “Mad For” which features Chris Brown, Meek Mill and Pusha T all of whom along with Luda have had some things to say about Drake. Luda states that he was not aware that everyone on the track had issues with Drake and that he does not tell other rappers what to write about on his tracks. He goes on to say that his verse on the track in not directed at anyone in particular. Luda is releasing the mixtape for free to flood the streets with new music and to let everyone know that music is still number 1 to him regardless of him shooting a couple movies.

Ludacris says that he loves the new generation of rappers, how people are creating their own lanes and growing their own underground movements before major labels even get involved.

When asked how he feels about the comments another southern legend Scarface made in our recent interview about Hip Hop losing its Soul, Luda says that “There are so many other genres that are mixing in [to Hip Hop] where it feels like we are loosing soul in the translation. But I definitively feel like there is soul in Hip Hop.”

Update (5/24/2013): Part two can be seen below.

United States of Audio - 3 Feet High and Rising Deconstructed (Artwork)

Several years in the making and including around 100 tracks, this is my personal tribute to De La Soul’s ’3 Feet High and Rising’. Using original sample sources, album tracks, interviews and rarities, ‘How High’s The Water Mama’ tells the story of one of hip hop’s most influential albums.

When De La Soul’s debut album dropped in 1989 I was ten years old. Yet, by some stroke of amazing good fortune a cassette copy of ’3 Feet High and Rising’ found its way into my hands thanks to my best mate’s older brother (though I’m pretty sure said brother had no idea of this fact!). The music was a revelation and had a significant influence in shaping my musical tastes – in fact I can’t think of any other album that has had such a profound effect on me as this one. Thus ’3 Feet High and Rising’ holds a special place in my musical affections. Now, some twenty-five years after its original release, it’s time to pay my respect to Pos, Dove, Mase, and Prince Paul.

Respect and thanks to DJ Moneyshot for providing the original inspiration for the mix, Strictly Kev for sample sourcing, design work and general encouragement, DJ Cheeba for keeping me on my toes, Chris Binstead (wherever you may be) for his great taste in music and for unwittingly exposing my young ears to ’3 Feet High and Rising’ in the first place, and of course, to Dave Jolicoeur, Kelvin Mercer, Vincent Mason and Paul Huston without whom none of this would be possible. – DJ Food

DJ Cosmo Baker’s Official 2013 Roots Picnic Mixtape

Cosmo Baker - 2013 Roots Picnic Mixtape (Artwork)

DJ Cosmo Baker curates the official mixtape for The 6th Annual Roots Picnic. The event takes place June 1st in Philadelpha, PA, and features performances by The Roots, Gary Clark Jr, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Araabmuzik, DJ Premier, Joey Bada$$, Hit-Boy, Lushlife and many more. To purchase tickets, click here.

At the 11th Hour it seemed like a good idea to write some sort of introduction to this mix and I gave it some thought as to what I was going to touch upon, but understand this is harder than it may seem. It’s difficult enough to capture everything that this collection of artists is about in the futile medium that’s one single mixtape. In the same regard, much like their entire career it’s almost impossible to pin down what The Roots, and Okayplayer are all about with just words. And that right there just may be the point.

I could take it back to 1992 or 93 when I first met these two dudes Ahmir and Tariq and this could be the story of “Philly dudes done well” or I could talk about the parallels of all or our respective career arcs and all that jazz. Or I could talk about how just some local musicans and DJs from South and West Philly have transformed into global music and cultural ambassadors.

But to me it comes down to one thing – love. The love that one has that makes one do what they do. It’s not for the money of the fame, but for the love of music that is the single reason why we’re in this game. That’s the greatest commonality that we all share, and one of the reasons why Okayplayer is what it is today in 2013. Perhaps it’s something in our mutual Philly history, and its collective cultural fiber; from being in that one time at that one place. I don’t know, but I do know one thing: I grew up with all this, and so when I was asked to contribute this mix, it was more than an honor. It felt like I was coming back home. – Cosmo Baker

With over 10 years in the industry, he’s produced hits for Jay-Z, Fabolous, Faith Evans and The Beastie Boys just to name a few. His versatility and penchant for picking choice samples has enabled him to stand out from his competition. Included are some of his productions (some famous, some obscure), and an original sample set to highlight his style of production. This will be part of “The Beatography” series, so expect future episodes informing and entertaining the masses on similar producers with an ever-growing legacy. Enjoy and be educated!

Flea Market Funk

To commemorate our 10th episode of Enjoy and Be Educated, we are fortunate and honored to have esteemed digger, DJ Prestige of Flea Market Funk as our first featured guest. Titling the episode in honor of his website, we at The Diggers Union as well as the audience are indeed entertained and educated by this man’s presence. A brief albeit informative interview detailing his beginnings, memorable gigs and wildest finds precedes his incredible set; all genres are covered as he seamlessly transcends from modern technology (Serato) to all 45s (not an easy feat to accomplish in itself, as extensive knowledge is required).
